So, you and your true love have been married one whole year! Where has the time gone?! It seems as if only yesterday you were busy planning and putting the final touches to your big day.
The one year wedding anniversary is symbolized by paper.
Like many wedding traditions, this one dates back to the Victorian Era (1837-1901), and has a long history today, many loving spouses celebrate the one year mark by giving a themed present, whether that means a ticket, a map, a poem, a book or paper jewellery.
Why do we follow this tradition, and why do we give paper? Although there is no definitive answer as to why paper is the traditional first anniversary gift, there are many different theories circulating about the symbolism of paper and the first year of marriage.
Many theories abound as to why a certain material symbolizes a particular year. The traditional list covers anniversary gift needs each year up until the 15th, after which it acknowledges only every fifth anniversary, up to the 60th celebration (after all, ideas may start to thin out if we kept this up for every single year).
Marriage traditions are deep and meaningful and should resound with the couple. Here are a few pointers as to why paper represents year one.
Paper represents a new start for you and your spouse in which you can write your future together. This is no longer a sole, but now a joint venture.
Much of the great world’s romantic literature was penned on paper. Without the great invention of paper, there’d be no Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre or Madame Bovary and no great love poems from the greats such as Shelley or Yeats.
You must nurture your marriage and paper is a reminder of marriages fragility. Protect it and respect it.
Paper is the age-old traditional means of communication (before I phones and technology!) Just think – before twitter and what’s app lovers would write and post their declarations of love (which, we have to admit, is somewhat more romantic than a text!)
Interweaving of lives
Paper comes from trees which grow and evolve. The interweaving of lives could be said to replicate branches growing older and intertwining.
Present ideas to celebrate your first anniversary:
Depending on your finances (!) this could be a plane ticket, a gig/festival ticket or a train ticket for your partner. Paper can mean that the possibilities are endless!
Whether you write your own thoughts down in a blank book or buy a nice edition of your partners favourite novel, a book is always a lovely token. We love Love Letters of Great Men and Women
Paper jewellery is a really sweet idea. We love these gorgeous peacock earrings which symbolize immortality and renewal.
A really thoughtful idea is to make or buy a map of a place special to the two of you. So, if you honeymooned in the States this map will be the perfect reminder of your first fantastic holiday you took as a married couple!
